FKP Needed Efficient Resources for SOE Project

With more than 30 years experience in the Australian property industry, FKP is one of Australia's leading diversified property and investment groups.

Originally founded in Queensland, FKP has grown into a truly diverse group with over 650 staff and operations across the country. It has dedicated offices in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and a ranking as an ASX top 200 performer.

FKP has an internal IT department with no shortage of work in supporting this large organisation. Recently they rolled out a new Standard Operating Environment to their office locations and other property assets owned by the organisation, such as a large number of retirement villages. The scale of this SOE rollout to around 800 computers presented a significant resourcing challenge for their IT Manager.

Dan called upon IT Leaders to supply additional resources to roll out the SOE to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast locations. IT Leaders provided a number of engineers as per Mr Crawford's requests. As we were involved with this project staging over a number of months, the IT Leaders technical staff assigned were also able to contribute on the fly to making the rollout a more efficient process.

Constant feedback from our staff about the efficiency of the SOE software & process allowed tweaks to be made to improve it. While an SOE design service from us was not requested, this care for our client and attention to detail directly lead to a more efficent and lower cost rollout across the country.

Largest Recycled Water Project in Australian History is supported by IT Leaders

The Western Corridor Recycled Water Pipeline is Australia's largest recycled water project. It's purpose is to transport recycled water to power stations and other required areas in QLD and conserve more than 200,000,000 litres per day of potable dam water for other purposes.

The Eastern Pipeline Alliance (EPA) is an alliance between GHD, Lucas and Transfield which was awarded the Eastern portion of this government project. This portion of the project comprised building over 100 kilometers of underground pipeline, traversing 50 waterway and road crossings (including the Brisbane river), and the building of ten pumping stations.

Lucas selected IT Leaders to assist with EPA operations in Queensland. IT Leaders supplied project staff to augment Lucas staff in the early stages of the project, providing both support and project execution assistance.

In the final stages of the project IT Leaders assumed full responsibility and hosting for all EPA server assets, and performed a physical-to-virtual migration of servers to then enable and organise disposal of IT assets. The migration was done into our cutting edge Private Cloud server farm, to enable complete server-independent failover, and maximum levels of redundancy, without requiring the further purchase of any assets.

We received excellent feedback from both Lucas and EPA consultants Evans Peck during and after the project, on our ability to maintain service levels during their fluctuating requirements.

IT Leaders creates Australian first: Very High Speed (low cost) Internet for remote areas

Linc Energy was not the first Australian company who faced challenges with getting high speed connectivity into a remote area.

Their Gas-To-Liquids plant outside of Chinchilla in Queensland is a world-leading energy technology that can turn coal into diesel and other liquid fuels. But being so far out west, there are very limited options for high speed Internet to link the plant back to their headquarters in Brisbane.

As one project we were working on for Linc Energy, we looked into every available internet option including DSL technologies, frame relay, two-way satellite, 'megalink' and microwave. Frame relay was initially chosen because it was the simplest technology to hook into their existing Telstra private network, but Telstra later advised the exchange at Chinchilla could not handle frame relay. Satellite was attractive for simplicity and scaleable speed but the capital and running cost was prohibitive.

A more complex, DSL/Microwave link was the next likely candidate, but it was going to cost at least $70,000 initially and also create multiple potential points of failure and multiple vendors to manage.

So IT Leaders' engineers then looked into the possibility of using multiple wireless connections. We knew that the wireless signal strength in the area was good but a single connection did not have enough bandwidth for the client. Some research indicated that that what we wanted to do had never been done in Australia before.

We imported some specialist technology and joined three wireless connections together, with a series of high gain, strategically located antennas and a load balancing multiplexing router.

The solution worked perfectly. For around half the monthly fee or less of any other suitable solution, and a small amount of setup cost, Linc Energy now has highly effective, partially redundant, high Internet bandwidth at their remote facility. Combined speed is a consistent 5.8Mbps download and 1.8Mbps upload. That is three times the speed of Frame Relay, at half the cost, and closer to one tenth the monthly fees of a two-way satellite link with that downlink speed.

We can duplicate this configuration almost anywhere in Australia, for the benefit of Linc Energy's expansion plans, and for any of our other clients or enterprises that require it. We can also add other levels of redundancy into the solution, for example adding a low bandwidth copper based connection (such as DSL, ISDN, one-way satellite or low end frame relay - whatever is available) and have automatic failover. This allows essential internet based services to continue to run in the event of a major wireless outage.
